Work it Out.

“Late night, come home.  Work sucks, I know.” –Blink 182, “All The Small Things”

I work at a restaurant full-time.  Sometimes, it’s amazing.  Sometimes, it’s completely awful.  Some days I have the most satisfied guests.  Other times, my guests are needy and demanding.  I realize that whatever happens, I must go on and work it out, whether I enjoy it or not.

“I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live.  That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God.” Ecclesiastes 3:12

There are days when I love my job.  These are the days I praise the Lord for because I know they are from Him.  Other days are more challenging and I realize that the Lord is calling me to work even harder.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”   Colossians 3:23-24

I was reminded of this recently one busy evening at the restaurant.

Who am I?

One star-gazing night in my convertible last summer, I found myself with a heart-broken gal-pal, a box of Kleenex, and a carton of cookie-dough ice cream.  What’s a girl to do?  One of the most friendship-boosting activities is to sit with each other during a time of need.  Everyone needs a smile, a hug, a listening ear, and at times, a shoulder to cry on.  No one wants to feel alone during a time of hurt, especially after an abrupt change or a loss in relationship.

Every girl knows that after such a time, a new chapter must begin.  Girls entertain certain rituals to set into motion a new beginning.  Sometimes it is a haircut, cleaning out her car, rearranging her furniture, or completely changing up her Facebook profile.  A new day calls for new pictures, new interests, and a new you!

Carry Me

“Carry me when I don’t have the strength.  Show your love and fill my heart with grace.” –Jon Baker and Chris Plank in “Carry Me”

As I sat in the chapel recently, I was in the balcony alone with my thoughts. I read a banner that quoted Matthew 11:28-30:  “Come to me all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

That sounded wonderful to me as I sat there all weary-souled with finals, stress and sore muscles from too many hours at the restaurant.  This semester has taken me down.  I remember a few weeks ago, at the end of a long night on my feet, just at the end of myself, asking my fellow servers, “Please carry me to my tables.  I can’t go on!”

My Little Man

There is a little man who has captured my heart. He has blue eyes and blond hair and little peachy cheeks. He looks up to me and likes to hold my hand. Last night, we watched Toy Story and played on his drum-set while singing, “Little Bunny Fou-Fou.

He is two-and-a-half years old.

He is my baby brother.

Last night, we shared snack time. He climbed up into his little chair and wanted two Go-Gurts. “One for you and one for me!” he said.

I look at this little man and I love him. We have the same father, and we have the same blood. We are bonded together forever in that way, because we have the same family. We are also bonded by the bonds of love. I understand this best when we spend time together, singing songs and sharing snacks.

So it is with the family of God. By Jesus’ blood, we believers are bonded together and share the same Father. We have the same blood forever. However, we don’t fully understand this joy until we spend time together as brothers and sisters enjoying this special bond and sharing our love for each other and for our Father—sometimes this involves singing songs and also sharing snacks! (Colossians 3:16, Psalm 34:8, Mark 14:21-23)

      THE SEMINARIAN WAGER

Everyone has faith. Regardless of how our faith developed, we should be willing to critically analyze those beliefs. While analyzing the validity of our faith, we should also be willing to analyze the validity of our doubts and cultural preconditions. If we are willing to do this, we wager that over time, the roots of our faith will strengthen toward truth, and will not be uprooted during challenging times. This site aims to provide worthwhile discussion regarding a critical evaluation of both religious belief and modern doubts.
