Church for Men

I wanted to post these two videos as examples and follow up to last week’s post. Enjoy!

While this example is not technically a church (it seems it would qualify as a “parachurch”), it is a great illustration of how to get chain saw-wielding dudes back into the pews. Admittedly, not ALL men will be attracted by this example, and every effort needs to take community context into consideration. Still, this success is sadly the exception rather than the rule.

This one is an example of how to REALLY appeal to men biblically. I think the war motif is hugely neglected in the church (or misdirected towards each other). Men need to know there is a battle worth fighting, and people worth defending. This battle is not fought with sword or spear, but the radical and sacrificial love of Christ. This video is very inspiring to me (well… at least once the dude in the pastel shirt and tie stops talking).

So what do you all think? Are there any problems with appealing to men in this way that cannot be resolved? Men, would something like this increase your interest in the church? Women, would this be encouraging or edifying to you?

  2. Could be that a lot of the relationship issues christian women talk about concern getting us up off our duffs and joining THEM in the battles they are often already engaged in. Let’s not make a characature of the women of God, many of them have plenty of backbone to protect and defend.

It is too bad that our culture perpetuates the idea that men are useless bafoons. And we men are too ready to believe it and give up on the idea that our lives can be meaningful.

Everyone has faith. Regardless of how our faith developed, we should be willing to critically analyze those beliefs. While analyzing the validity of our faith, we should also be willing to analyze the validity of our doubts and cultural preconditions. If we are willing to do this, we wager that over time, the roots of our faith will strengthen toward truth, and will not be uprooted during challenging times. This site aims to provide worthwhile discussion regarding a critical evaluation of both religious belief and modern doubts.
